Cardinal compares gay pride to KKK. Isn’t Catholic hierarchy more Klan-like?

When Catholic Cardinal Francis George of Chicago compared the city’s gay pride parade to a Ku Klux Klan rally intentionally disrupting church services, he obviously pissed off more than a few people. Some are demanding his resignation.

But what concerns me more than the comparison is that George fails to see the obvious similarities between Catholicism and the Klan. Indeed, the Catholic Church’s legacy is one of genocide and mass murder.

The church was instrumental in the violent colonization of Native Nations in the Americas. The church’s complicit silence and lack of political perspective aided the Nazi party. Indeed, the current pope was a Nazi.

The church’s ongoing denial of the value of condoms promotes the widespread death and sickness of people whose sexual proclivities fall outside of the narrow scope of what the church deems moral.

Ultimately, which is more disruptive—genocide in the Americas, tacitly supporting the holocaust, appointing a former Nazi as your leader and directly aiding the AIDS epidemic for nearly 20 years; or a bunch of singing gays, passing a church and by their presence, somehow disrupting the service?

The hypocrisy the Cardinal demonstrates, to compare a hate mongering group that wills genocide–not unlike the historical Catholic Church—with the LGBTQ community, a fundamentally oppressed group (indeed oppressed by the church itself), demonstrates the ongoing commitment Catholic leadership has to denying their roots, their privilege and the power they secured through mass murder.

Until the Catholic Church atones for its sins and quits committing political violence against oppressed communities, the biggest disruption to its spiritual practice comes from within the church hierarchy.

George’s careless comment pales in comparison to the horror of the church casting a former Nazi in the role of most infallible living person on earth. The institution is rotten.

climate chaos..five hundred million dead trees in Texas

We can’t say just one weather disaster is Climate change. But when there are dozens of disasters, way over the norm, with 5 of the hottest years ever in the last decade…  that’s runaway uncontrolled climate chaos.

So it’s tempting to say  it serves Texas right, when they suffer the worst droughts in their history. Greedy predator Texas politicians and corporations have led the campaign  that’s put back Climate Change control by decades, till it’s almost too late to save 1000′s of species, including even the human race.

Over 1200 people died in last week’s typhoon in Mindanao, and we can’t say that’s just climate change, but Christmas  isn’t even in the typhoon season, only that the sea is hotter than ever before.

So it must be tempting for the Philipinos, who hardly produce CO2, to blame the Texans in their tank like 4X4′s for their dead relatives, and rejoice that Texas is becoming a desert.

But this would be a mistake, only a tiny minority, the 1%, of the Texans are

1250 dead: climate criminals blamed for xmas typhoon

responsible for maintaining the suicidal capitalist system, the rest have little choice and of course the decimated natural world is entirely blameless.

Every week we hear about a new climate disaster, and it will get worse. Excess CO2 takes decades to work through the system, and this year was yet another record high in emissions.

Very soon it will be time to put the 1% of Climate Criminals on trial for their atrocities against the planet.

Drought and wildfires: Welcome to climate change in Texas

By Bruce Melton / The Rag Blog / December 29, 2011

AUSTIN — If this is not climate change, then this is exactly what climate change will be in as little as a decade. What has been happening in Texas, with these unprecedented (in time frames that matter) droughts and wildfires, is exactly what the climate scientists have been warning us about for over 20 years. We have been building up to this point since about the turn of the century, and now ecosystems have tipped over the edge. Climate feedbacks have kicked in hard.

The Texas Forest Services tells us that a half billion trees have died. Many more will die in the next five to 10 years from disease and insect infestation allowed by the damage that has already been done. These are the trees that have died in the drought, not the fires.

The first of this series of drought in 2005/6 was just classified as extreme. The last two have been one category worse than extreme — the exceptional category. The last 12 months were drier than the worst 12 months of the great drought of the 1950s. This has been a $10 billion drought, with another $1 billion in damages from the fires.

Worse, it’s hotter now. This summer was 4.9 degrees warmer than average. This may not seem like a lot, but think how sick you have been in the past if you have ever had a 102.9 degree temperature. The reason that increased heat makes such a big difference is that extra heat greatly increases evaporation intensifying the effects of drought. In other words, the same drought is much worse if it is only a little hotter…….

An open microphone assembly was held within the giant Moscow demonstrations

Almost all the speakers at a makeshift assembly were unanimous that the opposition status, consider themselves the ideologues of the protest movement, just want to get into power and do not intend to defend the interests of ordinary people. It is unlikely that peace, even thousands, meetings will lead to some radical changes. Defend the rights people can only do by fighting against the state and capital, and building around libertarian attitude.

When podium held by the free “opposition” oligarch Prokhorov, in black and red series he shouted, “Get in your Courchevel” and “The Power of millions, not the millionaires.” Anarchists and other participants in the meeting tried to block billionaire. Unfortunately, its passage further provided personal protection, but after Prokhorov flying snowballs.

After 16 hours, when some protesters began to disperse, and on the prospect of Sakharov became freer, and the column of anarchists and anti-fascists have joined together with her group of feminists, LGBT activists and individual representatives of the organized left-wing organizations has moved closer to the stage. The anarchists chanted “Freedom, equality, anarcho-communism,” “Higher, higher, black flag, the state chief enemy,” “Fascism shall not pass!”, “Our country – all of humanity!”(During a speech to the main podium speakers Nazi views), “All politics – crooks and thieves,” “Our candidate – self-government”, “Come on out, bring us a city,” “Down with fascism and capitalism,” “Path to Freedom – a revolution! “And other slogans.

After the meeting a column of anarchists, along with other protesters managed to arrange a procession from the expanded attributes and lit fireworks in the alley and Orlikova Kalanchevskaia street. Standing in a cordon police decided not to detain demonstrators.

About 18 hours, even at the metro station “Red Gate”, the ultra-right attacked a group of anarchists, who were returning from the rally. Police arrested along with neo-Nazis three anarchists, but they were soon released.

(FIN/2011)…

Argentina Investigates Human Rights Crimes of Spain’s Franco Era – IPS ipsnews.net: BUENOS AIRES, Dec 28, 2011 (IPS) – A judge in Argentina has begun to investigate human rights crimes committed during Spain’s civil war and the dictatorship of General Francisco Franco (1936-1975).

This month, federal judge Mara Servini asked Spain for information on Spanish military officials, as part of a new investigation based on a lawsuit filed in April 2010 by human rights lawyers in Argentina in the name of relatives of victims of the Franco dictatorship.

The judge requested the names of military officers involved in the Franco regime; lists of victims of forced disappearance and summary execution; lists of children who were stolen from their parents during the dictatorship; and the names of companies that allegedly benefited from the forced labour of political prisoners.

Huelga de Hambre contra el sistema/Hunger strike against the system  (in English below)

Hunger strike against the system / Hunger Strike Against the system

The economic situation prercariza the disadvantaged, not the result of a “crisis” but a SCAM produced by the financial system and supported by governments around the Spanish State. In turn, these public authorities are supported by all political institutionalized in the country, from the right, to the nationalists, to the “left” with its policy change “who remains silent, gives” who, instead of having the slightest decency to leave all parliaments to stop thieves govern alone, participate democratically in the institutionalized theft.

The rich are becoming richer and more and pay less taxes. The poor, we are increasingly poor and increasingly pay more taxes. The efforts of our survival, are only intended to enrich the institutionalized thieves.

Therefore I Cañadas Francisco Javier Gascón, Xavi for friends, born and residing in the city of Barcelona, in sound mind decided unilaterally declared an indefinite “Hunger and Thirst Strike, undefined” from December 31, 2011, to the 12.00 h at the front door of the Generalitat de Catalunya, located in Plaça Sant Jaume. And I demand, because this time is not acceptable to ask politicians institutionalized thieves, the following points, to depose my attitude:

1 .- Elimination of Copayment health Decree.

2 .- Absolution without charge of 20 colleagues accused of terrorism by Judge Eloy Velasco of the National Court, on the “Cas Parlament” of June 15, 2011, because I think that dissent is not terrorism, and yes it is the “institutionalized political thievery.”

3 .- immediate abolition of all foreclosures, retroactively from 2008.

4 .- immediate abolition of the monarchy.

5 .- Disposal, by decree of the senate chamber.

6 .- Nationalization of the entire Banking and Usury.

7 .- 75% reduction of the salaries of all the “Political Institutionalized” from Spain.

8 .- Reduced to 200% of the budgets of Defense and Interior.

9 .- requisition of all accounts located in tax havens and permanent expulsion from the country of all its owners.

10 .- Increase by 200% of the budget of Health, Education, Culture and Social Services.

Anonymous hacks thousands of credit card numbers from security firm and cyphers money to charity.

Doing whatever it takes to bring some perceived justice back in the world…

Looks like the hacking group ‘Anonymous‘ has been back at it with its latest disclosure that it has stolen thousands of credit card numbers belonging to clients of US based security think tank Stratfor with as much a million dollars to date being donated to charity.

At present Anonymous is boasting that it has stolen Stratfor’s confidential client list, which includes outlets like Apple, the US Air Force and mined it for more than 4000 credit card numbers, passwords and home addresses.

To date ‘Anonymous’ has posted a small slice of the 200 gigabytes worth of sensitive client information, going so far as to go on twitter to taunt that more outlets have been earmarked in days to come.

Strike at the Heart of the Beast!

According to ‘Anonymous’ it was able to attain access to client credit card information because Stratfor failed to encrypt the codes, an embarrassing snafu for an outlet that’s in the business of security.

Hours after publishing what it claimed was Stratfor’s client list, Anonymous tweeted a link to encrypted files online with names, phone numbers, emails, addresses and credit card account details.

‘Not as many as you expected? Worry not, fellow pirates and robin hoods. These are just the ‘A’s,’ read a message posted online that encouraged readers to download a file of the hacked information.

What is particularly distressing to clients at present is the extent of information that ‘Anonymous’ has been able to steal and what some of the notes on various emails may have to say. Something that could prove to be very embarrassing as well as incriminatory given the sensitive information that an outlet like the US Airforce would be privy to.

This evening ‘Anonymous’ went online with images of receipts of charitable donations it already has begun to administer.

One member of ‘anonymous’ went so far as to go on twitter using the handlebar, AnonymousAbu alleging that more than 90,000 credit cards from law enforcement, the intelligence community and journalists — ‘corporate/exec accounts of people like Fox’ News — had been hacked and used to make more than one million dollars worth of Christimas donations to entities that include for instance the Red Cross, CARE, Save the Children.Wishing everyone a “Merry LulzXMas” – a nod to its spin-off hacking group Lulz Security – Anonymous also posted a link on Twitter to a site containing the email, phone number and credit number of a US Homeland Security employee.

  kazakhstan kicks off

Kazakh resistance to State massacres

On December 16th (Kazakhstan’s Independence Day) more than 3,000 people met up for a demonstration at the main square of Zhanaozen, a town situated in the oil-rich Mangystau Province in the west of the country.

The people who took part in action were the ex-workers of local oil companies, fired after a bitter seven month strike. Their main demands were the payment of all outstanding salaries and improvement of work conditions.

As expected the oil workers and other town folk announced their intentions to hold a peaceful protest to the authorities of Kazakhstan. However, during the demo, a police Jeep was deliberately driven into the crowd of protesters and ‘peaceful’ went out of fashion from there on in. Angry people turned a police car upside down and set it on fire. A nearby police bus and a yurt (placed on the square “for the celebrations”) were

oil strikers camp Kazakhstan

also torched. Following this, the people, armed with sticks, pipes and molotov cocktails occupied the office of the local gas company and burned rooms on the ground floor of its office building. The local council building and a hotel were also burned. The oil workers surrounded the building and would not let the firemen get to the building. As an encore, they looted the houses of the rich in the exclusive, private area of town.

The state’s answer was to send army divisions, armoured transport and more police. The town’s population defended the strikers and, as a result of the attempt to bring it to ‘order’ more than ninety people (civilians and security) are said to have been killed, with eight hundred injured (these numbers are constantly growing).

Unsurprisingly, official media channels tell of much lower numbers. Many workers across the region have stopped work in support of the demonstrators. First oil workers of Mangystau Province started a sympathy strike, then workers of non-oil industries in the region also stopped their work in solidarity. The protests have become a general strike.

In what will probably become a 21st century standard ‘state-under-threat’ response, mobile phones in affected areas cannot be accessed, landlines do not work, Internet social networks and media are being blocked.

Of course, no mention has been made of punishing any police officers for firing on unarmed and peaceful people. The vast majority of the profits from the sale of the country’s resources are not shared with the nation’s poor, and the Kazakh government has a terrible human rights record. Time and time again members of the security forces, torture, beat, and mistreat detainees. The government continues to use arbitrary arrest and detention, and selectively prosecutes political opponents, often detaining them for long periods.

One might say that the spirit of the Arab spring has been taken up by Central Asians, but with the current low media interest (apart from a few newspapers here and there), there isn’t the same pressure on president Nazarbayev that there has been on Middle-Eastern leaders this past year (and they weren’t exactly exactly keen to fold up that pressure in any event).

However, Kazakhs don’t need to look as far away as the Arab world for inspiration. Another ex-Soviet Central Asian country, Kyrgystan, chucked out their despotic president Bakiyev in April 2010, following riots and demonstrations that led to Bakiyev’s ousting and the formation of a transitional government, headed by former philosophy lecturer Roza Otunbayeva. And what country did Bakiyev flee to? Kazakhstan.

No doubt president Nazarbaev has double checked his private jets are full of fuel and that his Swiss bank cashcard is still valid. Just in case.

Berlin

Yesterday, around 50 people protested in the centre of Berlin, criticising torture, repression and murder in Kazakhstan. Trade unionists including, metalworkers, teachers and health workers were joined by activists from the international “CampaignKazakhstan”, as well as members of the German LINKE (LEFT) party, SAV (CWI in Germany) and other left organisations, informing passers-by and tourists at Brandenburg gate of the events since last friday around the oil workers’ strike in western Kazakhstan.

The protesters shouted, “stop the slaughter in Kazakhstan!”

Squatting has become more and more common (or more conspicuous) as part of the Occupy movement. An unfinished duplex at 23rd and Alder has been occupied by a collective of people since mid November. That group of unnamed defendants have been summoned to court for eviction. The court date has been set for December 28.

Despite the hype New Earth was NOT FOUND.

The best Nasa could come up with  was ‘Kepler 22b’, a gassy  lump  800 light years away,  I mean… Meanwhile their blog complained that future missions have been cancelled for lack of funds, and after months of silence took a lot of planets off their ‘possibles’ list, saying that ‘starlight is much more variable than expected’..

2011. Kepler fails to find New Earth

Finally on Dec 20th ‘Kepler 20′ system was announced.. earth sized, okay, but orbiting their sun in a few days at 1000s of degrees C.

What we expected were earth sized planets in the habitable zone, at a few light years distance, with a magnetic field, etc…  Statistically these planets must exist in the 1000s of planets discovered.

Nasa can’t find them because: a)The Kepler telescope is too small and the next ones (TPF and SIM) are cancelled. b) Planets in the habitable zone are likely to cross in front of their suns only once or twice an earth year, and  so take years to confirm by that method. They can spot ‘Jupiter’ gas giants and ‘Mercury’ hells okay. c) The ‘unreliable starlight’ problem.

The Kepler mission does release  huge amounts of raw data, after a long delay, so teams of scientists and individuals are searching like crazy, combining with data from other telescopes, exciting new methods and instruments, in the continuing hunt for New Earth.

It’s still  possible some genius kid could find New Earth in this big pile of numbers

‘History of ‘The Free’

The first version came out in 1986 in Brixton, by the class-less Hooligan Press from the gang who ran 121 Anarchist Bookshop, Brixton Squatters Aid, with its revolting paper The Crowbar, and Sth London Stress etc, linked to both Black Flag and Class War. It sold out and was reprinted in 1992 by Attack International, and in German by Killroy Press.

In 2007 I began to update it and realised it needed a rewrite. Inspired by the Barcelona anarcho-squatting scene, where I live, this new edition is 3 times as long and 10 times better, with lots more humour, sex and triumphing alternatives. It does have some following, a huge number of Fiends on Farcebook, plus the Wordmess blog for free downloads (http://thefreeonline.wordpress.com). Also available on Scribd, Authonomy, Google, Issuu and the Anarchist Library, etc.) but still needs piles of word of mouth publicity to be more widely read…

That’s where you could help..

A totally unprovoked

and illegal war on a defenceless people, causing years of horrific massacres, up to one million dead, countless families destroyed, 4000 US army deaths, a bill of $801BN for the US taxpayer, a campaign of torture with nearly 100% impunity… etc etc etc…

President Obama has sunk to a new low in praising all this, becoming an accessory to brutal mass carnage. All this to secure oil contracts for America??  To stop Saddam Hussein selling oil in Euros?? To get military bases to attack Iran?? To use up stocks of weapons and boost the military economy??

Maybe all these things, but none are any excuse . Meanwhile the tame US media has gone almost silent, American withdrawal, it seems, is hardly worth talking about

The remaining US troops in Iraq are scheduled to leave by the end of this month. While there had been some talk about extending the December 31, 2011 deadline President Obama set early in his term, this was scuttled in October when the Iraqi government rebuffed the administration on two demands: that US troops be guaranteed immunity from prosecution and that the Pentagon be allowed to maintain bases in the country going forward.

While the US will retain a large embassy and two consulates in the country, with 4,000 to 5,000 contractors (down from a high of 180,000), this is a different outcome from the US government’s original expectation of permanently maintaining scores of military bases, including superbases, in the country designed to indefinitely anchor the US geo-political presence in the Middle East. While we may learn later that this long-term strategy, against all political obstacles, remains on track (including a plan for all that oil), the nearly nine-year-old occupation of Iraq is apparently coming to an end.

US soldiers examine another victim

The action has moved on to Afghanistan, Pakistan and Yemen. But five years ago, things were very different. The military, political, and economic shockwaves from the US invasion in 2003 were roiling the country, the sectarian violence was mounting, and Iraq was awash in blood and inconsolable sorrow. The human wreckage—as well as the huge economic toll—defied comprehension (and the bloodless number-crunching that surfaced now and then).

GREENPEACE INTERNATIONAL

    Dear friends,
The Amazon rainforest is facing its biggest threat ever. Damaging changes to Brazil’s Forest Code – the main laws protecting the rainforest – were just approved by Brazil’s Senate. These changes open up the Amazon to rampant deforestation and we now stand to lose more of this amazing ecosystem to destruction. Soon the only thing standing between the Amazon and the chainsaws will be Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, who can veto these changes. We all have a stake in protecting this irreplacable resource.

You can urge President Dilma to protect the Amazon and veto the new Forest Code. clic HERE http://www.greenpeace.org/international/en/campaigns/forests/amazon

We are edging closer to an “ecological calamity” in the Amazon rainforest and a vote in the Brazilian Senate has pushed us closer to the brink. It voted to approve destructive changes to the laws governing forest protection – called the Forest Code – that would open up the Amazon rainforest to rampant destruction. But it is not too late. Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff will have the opportunity to veto the changes – you can ask her to protect the Amazon and veto the new Forest Code.

Losing the Amazon rainforest to further deforestation would be an unimaginable loss for our planet and life on it, and the approval of this new Forest Code in Brazil would bring us one step closer to this terrible reality.

Not only is the Amazon home to one out of every ten species on the planet and important to the livelihoods of local communities, but it also functions as a carbon storage system, which can help us avoid some of the worst consequences of climate change. If deforestation and degradation of the Amazon continues increasing at the current pace the damage could actually transform the Amazon into part of the problem instead of part of the solution. The emissions from Amazon destruction contribute to a feedback cycle that will not only make climate change worse, by increasing warming trends, but cause further damage to the remaining forest, as forest fires in the region would intensify. The new Forest Code would bring us closer to this vicious cycle. Some scientists are already discussing the potential of losing the Amazon completely – imagine a world with no Amazon rainforest.

It won’t happen, because we will all keep demanding real protection for the rainforest until we get it. We know that a future free from destruction is possible, and we’ll condemn any attempts to destroy that future for the short-term profit of a few – the new Forest Code is one such attempt.

This past year the agricultural lobby pushed hard inside Brazil to weaken forest protection, many of the people pushing for these changes have been fined themselves for illegal deforestation. The result is the new Forest Code – it reduces the size of areas under protection, pardons people who deforested illegally and weakens enforcement of protection laws.

The text that has now been approved by the Senate is really bad; after the vote, Greenpeace Amazon campaign director Paulo Adario reemphasized that it opens up the rainforest to further deforestation. He also pointed out that scientists and the public prosecutors office have already said that the new Forest Code is not good for the environment and will be challenged.

There is still time to turn this situation around. You can send President Dilma an email right now and make it clear that she has a duty to protect the Amazon rainforest and veto the new Forest Code. All of us, including President Dilma, have a stake in the survival of this amazing ecosystem.

We’d like to keep you updated on this situation as it develops, so please keep in touch and make sure you are following us on Facebook and Twitter.

Sparks Defy Anti-Union Laws With Massive Wildcat Strike

Hundreds of electricians took wildcat strike action on Wednesday, defying the bosses who want to slash their wages, the anti-union laws which the bosses use to pick holes in strike mandates, and the union bureacracy which had to be dragged kicking and screaming to holding a ballot at all. The country’s biggest ‘unofficial’ walkout in decades represents a new stage in the UK class war – a stage in which workers recognise the limitations of their own leaderships, and consciously move beyond them. By cutting out the utterly compromised middle men and women in this way, working people come face to face with their ultimate enemy – huge corporations and the capitalist state………..

………But despite yesterday’s burning of ‘sign or be sacked’ Balfour contracts, the company will soon want to make good on their threats. In this, they will have the assistance of Unite fat cats. If Wednesday 7th December is to be the high water mark of the rank and file resistance, Sparks will lose this historic battle. If they are to win, they must now organise completely independently of both Unite and the anti-union laws, and immediately make an appeal to the wider working class for support.

Click here for my analysis of why workers and union bosses are enemies.

After visiting 94 offices on Capitol Hill Tuesday, unemployed demonstrators targeted a Newt Gingrich fundraising event on Wednesday night. The hotel, like many of the representatives’ offices, locked its doors to the demonstrators, who are in D.C. with a group called “Take Back the Capitol.” Wednesday night the demonstrators called for Gingrich to discuss his jobs plans with the “99% outside” protesting, rather than the “1% who are contributing thousands to his campaign,” according to a press release sent out by organizers. Gingrich never came out.

“Take Back the Capitol” is made up of “unemployed and underemployed people from every state, students, community activists, union members, healthcare advocates, and travelers from Occupy sites from coast to coast,” according to the group’s website. Organized labor has helped coordinate three days’ worth of Capitol Hill protests under that banner.

The protesters are in D.C. as Congress is expected to vote on extending unemployment insurance to 2.2 million unemployed workers who face losing their benefits if the legislation is not passed.

Today, Senate Republicans blocked a vote on President Obama’s nomination to lead the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Congress created the bureau, which was the brain child of Massachussets Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren, during last year’s financial reforms. But Republicans have worked to strip its authority ever since, and have vowed not to confirm a director for it. Obama is weighing a recess appointment, which would circumvent the Senate vote.

Meanwhile, many of the demonstrators are using cameras on their mobile phones to upload images of members of Congress ignoring them. In the video below, Congressman Joe Walsh, who represents Illinois’ 8th District, was caught on video fleeing from his constituents. “We’ve been waiting a few hours to speak with you congressman,” a woman is heard saying as Walsh races down a set of stair. “You can at least acknowledge us,” the woman says once she realizes the congressman is fleeing.

California Rep. Elton Gallegly, a Republican who represents most of Ventura County and inland Santa Barbara Couny, at least acknowledged the demonstrators with a “Merry Christmas,” but he then ran quickly behind locked doors.

“Even when one of his constituents presented herself and tried to talk to him, he just kept saying ‘Merry Christmas,’” Esperanza Arrizon, a youth leader with Good Jobs LA, wrote about the event. According to her, before the congressman ran behind closed doors he did have one question for demonstrators, “I just donated 750 gifts to needy children, how many of you can say you did that?”

The event is being organized by several community groups by the American Dream Movement, a partnership between several groups including MoveOn.org, SEIU and other progressive, labor, and faith-based organizations.

“Because Mumia has for thirty years been subjected to torture on death row and because he is innocent, justice for Mumia will not be served by life imprisonment, but by his release from prison.”

Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams announced Wednesday this office has called off their 30-year battle to execute former Black Panther Mumia Abu-Jamal for allegedly murdering a white police officer, the Associated Press reports. The decision comes just two days short of the 30th anniversary of the killing.

Supporters and advocates who argue Abu-Jamal is not guilty say Williams’ decision shouldn’t be a surprise.

“Now that it is clear that Mumia should never have been on death row in the first place, justice will not be served by relegating him to prison for the rest of his life—yet another form of death sentence. Based on even a minimal following of international human rights standards, Mumia must now be released,” South African activist Archbishop Desmond Tutu said in a statement sent out by FreeMumia.com.

“I therefore join the call, and ask others to follow, asking District Attorney Seth Williams to rise to the challenge of reconciliation, human rights, and justice: drop this case now, and allow Mumia Abu-Jamal to be immediately released, with full time served,” Tutu continued.

“The news that the DA’s Office of Philadelphia is no longer seeking the death penalty for Mumia is no news to supporters of the nearly 30 year Pennsylvania Death Row prisoner,” Dr. Johanna Fernandez wrote in a statement to the Loop21.com. Fernandez is a U.S. History professor at Baruch College and an advocate who’s been working on Abu-Jamal’s case for several years.

“Because Mumia has for thirty years been subjected to torture on death row and because he is innocent, justice for Mumia will not be served by life imprisonment, but by his release from prison.”

Fernandez, who produced a documentary on Abu-Jamal, explains the conditions today of the Pennsylvania courts that found Abu-Jamal guilty and describes his prison cell. From Loop21.com:

We must remember that the same Pennsylvania courts that are being denounced today for the mass incarceration of juveniles are the same courts that framed Mumia. Pennsylvania has more juveniles serving life than any other state in the nation. The backdrop of constitutional violations in Mumia’s case include: routine corruption, evidence tampering, prosecutorial misconduct, judicial racism, discrimination in jury selection, and the disproportionate incarceration of African Americans and Latinos. The issue of mass incarceration of black and Latino males is one of the gravest civil rights crises of our time.

We’re sobered by the realization that for 30 years an international movement kept Abu-Jamal alive long enough for the appeals process to run its course. But what if the movement hadn’t kept him alive? For 30 years Abu-Jamal has been forced to withstand tortured isolation in a windowless cell the size of a small bathroom. For thirty years the threat of execution has hung over his head, and he’s not been allowed to touch his children or his grandchildren, or his wife and siblings, or his friends.

Supporters of Abu-Jamal, including Princeton professor Cornel West and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, have a symposium planned for Friday at the National Constitution Center for the man they call an “innocent revolutionary and celebrated journalist.”

ChimerasAnimal-Human Hybrids Spark Controversy

Scientists have begun blurring the line between human and animal by producing chimeras—a hybrid creature that’s part human, part animal.

Chinese scientists at the Shanghai Second Medical University in 2003 successfully fused human cells with rabbit eggs. The embryos were reportedly the first human-animal chimeras successfully created. They were allowed to develop for several days in a laboratory dish before the scientists destroyed the embryos to harvest their stem cells.

In Minnesota last year researchers at the Mayo Clinic created pigs with human blood flowing through their bodies.

And at Stanford University in California an experiment might be done later this year to create mice with human brains.

Scientists feel that, the more humanlike the animal, the better research model it makes for testing drugs or possibly growing “spare parts,” such as livers, to transplant into humans.

Watching how human cells mature and interact in a living creature may also lead to the discoveries of new medical treatments.

But creating human-animal chimeras—named after a monster in Greek mythology that had a lion’s head, goat’s body, and serpent’s tail—has raised troubling questions, this is even worse than experimenting on normal animals: What new subhuman combination should be produced and for what purpose? At what point would it be considered human and have human rights?

There are currently no U.S. federal laws that address these issues.

‘Occupy’ protesters reclaiming foreclosed homes in 20 cities

#OccupyOurHomes, By David Edwards. The 99 percent movement, which has been evicted from many of their encampments across the country, is finding common cause with thousands of homeowners who are also being evicted from their homes.

Even though the movement has often been criticized for a lack of defined goals, Tuesday’s “Occupy Our Homes” action in at least 20 cities makes it clear that they are standing up to banks to reverse foreclosures.

“We’re in the neighborhood in New York City that had the highest number of foreclosure filings in 2010 to send a message that the economy is failing the 99 percent,” Vocal New York organizer Sean Barry told Raw Story from a Brooklyn neighborhood as about 200 protesters chanted in the background.

“We’re here because [there are] a lot of empty buildings owned by Wall Street banks and we’re going to liberate them.”

Tasha Glasgow, the single mother of a 9-year-old daughter and a 5-year-old son, was expected to be one of the first occupants of a reclaimed home. Barry said that Glasgow, who had been in and out of the shelter system in New York City, had been slated to get a Section 8 voucher before budget cuts by Mayor Michael Bloomberg put an end to that promise.

“We’ve gained access to the home, and we’ve got the support of the neighbors,” Barry explained. “They’re going to start occupying it. … And then, there’s going to be 24/7 eviction defense by Occupy Wall Street.”

There were over 40 events planned in more than 20 cities Tuesday, but that is just the beginning.

“When it comes to Wall Street’s control over our economy, our democracy and our lives, there’s few better examples than the housing crisis,” Barry noted. “Occupy Wall Street is going to continue to support this national Occupy Our Homes campaign, and both defend homeowners who are being threatened with eviction due to foreclosure, and to move families that need homes into vacant buildings that banks are just sitting on.”

The utter failure that is the war on drugs seems to have ulterior motives besides protecting society, as evidence by the countless harmful chemicals that are legal to consume.  Marijuana is the most obvious example of a substance that remains illegal not because of health threats or because it’s a danger to society, but rather because its benefits threaten entire industries, especially Big Pharma.

If you need a fix to ease pain, depression, anxiety, sleep disorders and a host of other ailments, then a legal drug dealer is happy to sell you a chemical concoction with endless side effects.  Recent studies show huge spikes in psychiatric drug use as well as addiction to prescription pain pills, yet they remain legal and doctors get incentives to push them.

In nearly every case, marijuana is a safer alternative and just as effective.  When eaten or vaporized, cannabis has proven entirely beneficial as a natural alternative. Here are 5 popular but dangerous drugs that could, in most cases, be replaced by all natural

1. Painkillers: Vicodin, Demerol, Oxycontin, or Percodan are used to treat moderate or severe pain.  They’re all highly addictive and come with side effects that vary widely from stomach problems, dizziness, depression, pain and spasms, to even death. Marijuana is a proven pain reliever that takes the edge off even the most severe pain.  It is not physically addictive, has very few side effects by comparison, and has never caused a single death in 5000 years of recorded use.

2. Tranquilizers: Valium, Xanax, and Ambien are examples of popular anti-anxiety drugs.  All Americans will likely know someone close to them who are dependent on these drugs to cope with daily life.  The side effects are similar to anti-depressants and painkillers; stomach and liver problems, depression or suicidal thoughts, dizziness and confusion, etc.  Marijuana is an excellent substitute for these temporary anxiety relievers, again with far fewer negative effects.

3. Alcohol: Alcohol is the most commonly used and accepted substance for self-regulated stress relief.  It’s used by countless Americans to take the edge off a long work day, and also by many soldiers seeking to relieve Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).  Alcohol is highly addictive and causes many long-term problems like high blood pressure and liver failure.  Marijuana has proven to be far safer and more effective in reducing stress, especially among PTSD sufferers.

4. Anti-depressants: Prozac, Zoloft, Elavil, or Paxil are popular anti-depressants that a huge portion of the population are now dependent on. Side effects like nausea and sexual dysfunction are common, while suicidal tendencies are also increased tremendously, which seems to negate their very prupose.  These selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) reduce the body’s ability to produce natural serotonin and can be difficult for people to find a healthy balance once they rid the drug from their system.  Marijuana, although a temporary anti-depressant, is far less dangerous and may result in instant happiness bordering on silliness.

5. Aspirin and Tylenol: These commonly-used over-the-counter drugs for minor aches and pains cause stomach problems like ulcers, liver damage, and even death. That’s right, Tylenol causes about 450 deaths a year and Aspirin causes a whopping 13,000 deaths per year from sudden bleeding.  Many natural alternatives can be used for the symptoms that these drugs ease, and marijuana is just one of the safer options — with none of the damaging side effects.

As you can see, marijuana, which can be easily grown in nearly every climate, is a huge threat to these billion-dollar-a-year drugs.  And this list represents a tiny fraction of the harmful pharmaceuticals that can be replaced by cannabis.  To claim that cannabis is more dangerous than any of these popular legal substances is blatantly false, thus there’s no reason for its prohibition other than the threat of competition to Big Pharma.

Thankfully, you’re not a criminal in over a dozen US states if you use marijuana in place of them.

Editor’s note: Over the past week various elements both in Washington DC and Tel Aviv have been promoting a renewed rhetoric of an Iranian threat. Back in July of this year, Professor Chomsky wrote the following commentary on the issue that resonates even louder today.

Cambridge, Ma - The dire threat of Iran is widely recognised to be the most serious foreign policy crisis facing the Obama administration. General Petraeus informed the Senate Committee on Armed Services in March 2010 that “the Iranian regime is the primary state-level threat to stability” in the US Central Command area of responsibility, the Middle East and Central Asia, the primary region of US global concerns. The term “stability” here has its usual technical meaning: firmly under US control. In June 2010 Congress strengthened the sanctions against Iran, with even more severe penalties against foreign companies. The Obama administration has been rapidly expanding US offensive capacity in the African island of Diego Garcia, claimed by Britain, which had expelled the population so that the US could build the massive base it uses for attacks in the Central Command area. The Navy reports sending a submarine tender to the island to service nuclear-powered guided-missile submarines with Tomahawk missiles, which can carry nuclear warheads. Each submarine is reported to have the striking power of a typical carrier battle group. According to a US Navy cargo manifest obtained by

Austerity is violence on the bodies of women

In Rome, activist women responded to the #occupypatriarchy call out initiated by the Occupy Wall Street Movement. The group, composed of students, precarious workers and migrants, marched through the city centre’s high streets on November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Recent reports and stats show how in Italy the new “welfare system” feeds on unpaid women’s work: the unpaid work of grandmothers looking after their grandchildren because nursery schools cannot be afforded, daughters supporting their elderly parents, mothers supporting their grown up children. With the cuts to social services the responsibility of that work falls on the women.

In these austere times, gender equality has become a “luxury item”. When the government seems to support policies on work/life balance, what they’re de facto supporting is the principle according to which a woman must undertake several jobs at the same time: all precarious, without the guarantees of the “official” job market, without wages and employment rights. This is violence masked up as austerity!

The crisis attacks every possibility of autonomy, self-determination and freedom of choice. This is, for example, the aim of the Tarzia Law, which wants to turn our formerly independent family planning centres into family and baby protection centres in the hands of non-qualified Catholic “advisers”. This goal has already been achieved in the region of Lazio, in what appears to be an experiment undertaken to legitimise the same savagery on a national scale. Independent family planning centres and abortion rights are an area of conflict on which women in Italy must keep fighting, especially with our new government and its Vatican friends.
