stop anti gay law in Nigeria

Posted on November 14, 2012 by

A bill in Nigeria’s House of Representatives has unanimously passed it’s second reading that would criminalize same-sex marriage, same-sex public displays of affection, and all gay organizations. Having a same-sex marriage would be punishable with 14 years imprisonment, and anyone who helps could get up to 10 years as well.

“It is alien to our society and culture and it must not be imported,” House majority leader Mulikat Adeola-Akande said during debate, referring to same-sex marriage.“Religion abhors it and our culture has no place for it,” she added.

House minority leader Femi Gbajabiamila said the bill represents “convergence of both law and morality.” He said that same-sex marriage “is both illegal and immoral.”

Nigeria’s senate in November 2011 approved the bill that would make same-sex marriages punishable by up to 14 years for the couple and 10 for anyone abetting such unions.

It also set out a 10-year sentence for “any person who … directly or indirectly makes public show of same-sex amorous relationships”. – via the AFP.

Since the bill would also outlaw all gay organizations as well, it’s up in the air if Nigeria’s AIDs organizations would now become illegal. The bill still has to go through a third and final vote in the House before it goes to President Goodluck Jonathan for his signature. If he signs, and it looks like he will, it will then be law.

  1. I just signed a petition calling on Nigeria’s President to veto a horrific bill that would jail gay and lesbian people for up to 14 years – just for being gay.

This new law would make it crime not only to be gay but also to know and support a person who is gay or lesbian. Activists in Nigeria have asked for help to stop the bill.

If the President knows we’re all watching, he will need to respond. With a media firestorm and a petition of 100,000 signatures from around the world – he’ll have to veto. Will you sign with me now?
