Typhoons are heat engines.. there’s a direct link between severity and sea temperatures.. there’s also a direct link between sea temperatures and levels of CO2 released into the atmosphere. Typhoons are normal, super typhoons of unprecedented power are fueled by Climate Change. Responsible for the deaths of at least 5000 innocent people, and the horrific destruction caused by Haiyan/Yolanda are the companies who get over $500 billion a year subsidies on top of their profits to extract and burn fossil fuels when cheap renewables are available.

Also guilty are the climate criminal politicians who one by one are abandoning any semblance of trying to control CO2 emissions while feeding at the trough of the oil corporations. The 1% are all mass murderers and ecocidal maniacs, though most of us or our kids may not be killed till 50 years in the future as emissions accumulate. These people actually plan to live on islands in luxury bunkers as the whole biosphere, that thin film of life on the Earth’s surface,  falls apart.

”Super Typhoon Haiyan tracked over surface waters that were of near-average warmth, 29.5 – 30.5°C (85 – 87°F.) However, the waters at a depth of 100 meters (328 feet) beneath Haiyan during its rapid intensification phase were a huge 3°C above average, according to Professor I-I Lin of the Department of Atmospheric Science at the National Taiwan University. An analysis by the Japan Meteorological Agency for October showed ocean temperatures 4 – 5°C (7 – 9°F) above average during October (Figure 1). This analysis was from a model.”

”When looking at actual measurements made by the Argo float data in early November, the temperatures in the layer 100 meters below the surface under Haiyan were about 3°C above average, not 4 – 5°C, according to Dr. Lin. As the typhoon stirred this unusually warm water to the surface, the storm was likely able to feed off the heat, allowing Haiyan to intensify into one of the strongest tropical cyclones ever observed.”

The Climate Pause

One excuse to ignore Climate Change is the so called ‘PAUSE’, it seems temperatures have not risen as fast as predicted… great News if true, but Dr Jeff Masters observes ” It is worth pointing out that a just-released paper by British and Canadian researchers shows that the global surface temperature rise of the past 15 years has been greatly underestimated. As discussed at realclimate.org, “The reason is the data gaps in the weather station network, especially in the Arctic. If you fill these data gaps using satellite measurements, the warming trend is more than doubled in the widely-used HadCRUT4 data, and the much-discussed “warming pause” has virtually disappeared.”

Whether real or not the Climate Pause is no escuse for abandoning climate goals, (or even like the Spanish Government penalize solar power and making storing it illegal! ) The climate equation has too many variables, but one thing is simple, with rocketing greenhouse emissions temperatures will also sooner or later go off the scale. See diagram below:

800-k-year CO2-concentration

We reprint below a post from after the Bopha disaster last year….

Could Oil Companies be Sued for Climate Massacre?

As they become more common, climate related disasters may allow prosecution of the big Oil Companies, which they could be sued for billions for willfully dumping CO2 in the air for profit, with clean alternatives available.

You cannot say that one climate massacre is caused only by climate change, but statistically we know that they are. Just as a child with thyroid cancer living next to Fukushima may have contracted it by chance, but if the cancer rate has increased 1000%, then nine out of ten victims are caused by the Nuclear meltdown.

To take that analogy further, if ten possible victims of Climate Chaos sued Exxon, nine of them could be real victims, only we can’t say which nine….

And in many cases the evidence is clear. Super Typhoon Bhopa/Pablo for instance, which massacred hundreds and caused unbelievable damage in a few hours, was I believe the first ever Category 5 Typhoon in known history to hit the Phillipines. And in December, when the season is finishing.  WHY? One of the many variables is key.. the SST Sea Surface Temperature was still way over 30C for thousands of miles around!  And that is being pinned down with overwhelming evidence to Climate Change.

The possibility is growing that innocent victims, like those who survived in Mindanao, could take a class action Law Suit in the United States against the Oil and Coal companies, for willfully dumping CO2 in our atmosphere for profit (they have known the problem since the 1980s). One aim would be to force the ‘ruling’ Corporations to take the problem seriously if its not already too late.

To win such an action we would need to prove at least the following:

1) That the actions of these Climate Criminals is willfull. That they have known what they were doing for decades. There is ample evidence of this I think.

2) To prove that they have deliberately covered up evidence and sabotaged climate mitigation in a sustained and highly financed campaign. This evidence is gradually leaking out and seems like a true scandal.

3) To show that the damage really was done by Climate Change. I think this is now possible, see the Fukushima analogy above, and testimony from innumerable scientific studies.

4) To show that the corporations had green alternatives they actively and knowingly suppressed or chose to ignore. There is ample evidence also of this. We have plenty of cheap renewable energy available., ( another scandal is the existence of Green 100% CO2-free ‘gasoline’, cars can easily be adapted to run on cheap pollution free ammonia, see blog here  http://co2freefuelexistsnow.wordpress.com/ )

But of course Climate Change victims are the poor, women and kids, country people, etc, and are even more destitute and helpless after a disaster.  A Court Case for Climate Damage in the US could only work if it were sponsored by Climate Change Mitigation  and Divestment campaigns in that country.

To Shaun: the ‘natural disaster’ of this hurricane now says not only was it caused by climate change BUT ALSO oil companies and governments. This said, the natural disaster had some element of human involvement.
