Re-Planting A Mid Summer Vegetable Garden – for Autumn Eating

These notes are for a temperate or Mediterranean climate in the Nth Hemisphere, and for gardens with ample water. Not for example for southern Spain and North Africa where temperatures have been over 40C  (104F) all week with a new record of 47.4C  (117.3F) in Cordoba.

One effect of climate change is climate chaos, e,g. unwatered gardens are shriveling here in Barcelona after 3 months of solid sunshine, yet with sea temperatures up to 30C we can expect Autumn flooding.summer vegetable gardenGreen beans can be planted in the summer vegetable garden now for a mid to late fall harvest

Other plants not listed below that can still be replanted here: Courgettes (zucchini, calabacín) grow really fast and fruit bountifully. Pumpkins often just survive the summer and grow huge in autumn. And it’s not too early to start cauliflowers, cabbage, broccoli and sprouts (and leeks) for autumn and winter, planting out the seedlings under nets till the plague of butterflies tapers off.

Planting a mid-summer vegetable garden is an excellent way to increase and extend your garden’s harvest!

Perhaps your spring-planted garden got away from you this year. Or, maybe life was simply too busy to get one planted at all. Well, no worries, (depending on where you live and water availability), it’s not too late! Planting a mid-summer vegetable garden is an excellent way to have a 2nd chance at fresh veggies this year! List of Monsanto Owned “Food” Producers

Credit: True Activist

There are several reasons that people are opposed to Monsanto, but among the top two are their involvement with GMOs and their corruption of the U.S. government.

One of the more outrageous schemes they pulled off in recent years was to ensure the passing of the “Monsanto Protection Act” that essentially prevented courts from prosecuting Monsanto over GMO-related health issues and was allegedly partly written by the company itself.

Though the Act was only in effect for six months, similar bills have been signed into law that protect companies over consumers. Continue reading List of Monsanto Owned “Food” Producers

Eco-anarchist Marius Mason is Being Moved out of Secure Admin Unit

We are excited to announce that Marius received confirmation yesterday that he will be moving to general population at Carswell.  As many know, this has been a long time coming and a request that Marius, his attorney, his family, and supporters have made repeatedly for him to be moved from the Admin Unit.

In general population Marius will be able to truly go outside for the first time in seven years, without the barriers of razor wire and concrete.  He will also be able to participate in more educational programs and groups.  Carswell’s general population has a large sunny communal visiting room that Marius’ family and friends will be able to see him in, rather than the small enclosed space with its own security detail.  We are also eager to see if Marius will have better control over his own diet. Putting back the Carbon inThe Soil.. a Solution to Climate Change

If capitalist agro business could be abolished then the climate crisis could be solved and food production increased, just by changing our farming methods to lock carbon into the soil.

The Soil Solution to Climate Change…   Film Review

This informational film, based on the French 4 per 1,000 initiative, proposes an ancient form of carbon sequestration* as an alternative to risky technological methods of carbon sequestration. There is strong scientific consensus that to prevent catastrophic global warming, atmospheric CO2 levels must be reduced from 400 parts per million (ppm) to 350 ppm.

The 4 per 1,000 initiative encourages all UN member countries to increase the carbon in their soils by 0.4% per year by transitioning from industrial agriculture – which tends to strip soil of carbon – to more traditional practices that tend to replenish soil carbon (and simultaneously increase yields: see Organic and Sustainable Farming Increases Yields by 79% or More). Australian educator, author and co-inventor of Permaculture, Bruce Charles ‘Bill’ Mollison, died on the 24 September 2016 in Sisters Creek, Tasmania. He has been praised across the world for his visionary work, and left behind a global network of ‘peaceful warriors’ in over 100 countries working tirelessly to fulfill his ambition to build harmony between humanity and Mother Earth.

The Tasmanian rainforests gave him the founding structure for his life’s passion, Permaculture: the idea that we could consciously design sustainable systems which enabled human beings to live within their means and for all wildlife to flourish with us.

Born 1928 in the Bass Strait fishing village of Stanley, Tasmania, Bill’s life story included backwoodsman, academic, storyteller, lady’s man, and to many just ‘Uncle Bill’, doing all these things par excellence.

Bill was co-founder, with David Holmgren, of the permaculture movement – a worldwide network of remarkable resilience, with organisations now operating in 126 countries and projects in at least 140, inspiring individuals and communities to take initiatives in fields as diverse as food production, building design, community economics and community development.
