Nuit Debout: Other voices..

from Julius Gavroche  with thanks

The Nuit Debout movement in France takes on no single form, even behind the ritual of the general assemblies in Paris and now other cities.  It is plural, chaotic, fed by the multiple protests against the country’s new proposed labour law and a diversity of organisations and collectives coming from other social movements.  Yet it is precisely in this absence of order that the square occupations become spaces of convergence and of proliferation (rather than of enforced collective decision making), susceptible of generating lines of resistance/creation beyond State-Capital.

The events multiply and the voices speaking also become many.  We share below two texts that contribute to further understanding, the first from The Acorn (number 23 – 08/04/2016) and the second from open Democracy (08/04/2016), by Geoffrey Pleyers …

1. March 39 and counting… Nuit Debout and the new French uprising
36marsnantes2
Protesters amidst the teargas in Nantes on April 5 – otherwise known as March 36

The spirit of resistance has captured the imagination of a new generation in France, as youth-led opposition to neoliberal labour “reforms” has spiralled into full-on rejection of the whole capitalist system on the street and squares.

The situation took on a new dimension after the general strike and day of action on Thursday March 31. There was a call for people not to go home afterwards but to stay on the streets, beginning a wave of overnight “Nuit Debout” occupations that has spread from Paris across France and into the Iberian peninsular, Belgium and Germany.

The March 31 “moment” has also been symbolically extended by the renaming of the following days of the mobilisation as March 32, March 33 and so on. Continue reading French Uprising and Nuit Debout amazing photo essay

Nuit Debout, paris, france, occupy

France -Since massive mobilizations swept the nation on March 31st against proposed Labor legislation, thousands of people have held nightly occupy style public assemblies coined ‘Nuit Debout’ or Night Stand to further a movement that has grown into a full-on rejection of the current systems of governance.

  1. RT : Foto de está tarde. Tomemos Europa!

The Nuit Debout public assemblies released the following statement.   (List of demo’s scheduled for Saturday below)

Our mobilization was initially aimed at protesting against the French Labour Law. This reform is not an isolated case, since it comes as a new piece in the austerity measures which already affected our European neighbors and which will have the same effects as the Italian Job Acts or the Reforma Laboral in Spain. This concretely means more layoffs, more precarity, growing inequalities and the shaping of private interests. We refuse to suffer this shock strategy, notably imposed in the context of an authoritarian state of emergency.

The debates taking place in the assemblies on Republic square prove that the general exasperation goes way beyond the Labour Law and opens a more global issue: the reconsideration of a social and political system stuck into a deep crisis and on its way out. We will not be the ones crying because of its end.

This movement was not born and will not die in Paris. From the Arab Spring to the 15M Movement, from Tahrir Square to Gezi park, Republic square and the plenty of other places occupied tonight in France are depicting the same angers, the same hopes and the same conviction: the need for a new society, where Democracy, Dignity and Liberty would not be hollow shells.

Supporting testimonies received from abroad warm us and strengthen our commitment. This movement is yours too. It has no limit, no border and it belongs to all of those who wish to be part of it. We are thousands, but we can be millions. Together, standing, awake. Let’s rise up together.

Nuit debout protesters occupy French cities in revolutionary call for change

from The Guardian   For more than a week, vast nocturnal gatherings have spread across France in a citizen-led movement that has rattled the government4899018_6_bbfc_des-manifestants-discutent-entre-eux-le-8_ff15974e6ec4ff1e198a3632ed7a6511 in Paris     As night fell over Paris, thousands of people sat cross-legged in the vast square at Place de la République, taking turns to pass round a microphone and denounce everything from the dominance of Google to tax evasion or inequality on housing estates.

The debating continued into the early hours of the morning, with soup and sandwiches on hand in the canteen tent and a protest choir singing revolutionary songs.

One of the demands is the repeal of the Jobs Law approved last week

A handful of protesters in tents then bedded down to “occupy” the square for the night before being asked to move on by police just before dawn. But the next morning they returned to set up their protest camp again.

watch ‘Pieces of Madrid’: latest Global Uprisings docu

by Global Uprisings on April 21, 2014

slide-10-728

The latest short documentary in the Global Uprisings series explores ongoing resistance and self-organization in the midst of the crisis in Spain.

As social conditions continue to deteriorate across Spain, people have been turning to the streets and to each other to find solutions to the crisis. This film tells the story of the massive mobilization that saw millions of people converge on Madrid on March 22, 2014; the story of the proliferation of social centers, community gardens, self-organized food banks; and the story of large-scale housing occupations by and for families that have been evicted. The film pieces together many of the creative ways that people have been coping with crisis and asks what the future may hold for Spain.

Filmed and edited in March/April 2014, it is part of the Global Uprisings documentary series. View more at globaluprisings.org.

Hundreds of people ”regain” a building in central Madrid . The best gift of kings day (6th Jan), we want  no people without homes or homes without people. Epiphany Today, 11 families have recovered a building # CaixaBank. .    HT:    Riot police are stationed outside. While there was an agreement not to evict immediately, logically there is distrust. Everyone waiting for it to happen.

Comrades report that they have reached an agreement with the police: If the traffic is let move in the street they will not intervene because the evictio isn’t  their department. We begin to clear the road so they vehicles and people csn move past. The information provided is ratified: : They agree to move the riot òlice if we clear the road.. Yes We Can Win!

There are still two riot police lorries on the corner. The people keep blocking the door

We’re preparing to read tha Communique from ‘Social Work’.. . Building recovered!

Social Work clmmunique from Madrid on the new building occupied in Malasaña

..”We are a large family of people of all ages and backgrounds who have lawfully squatted for housing and emergency housing insecurity. We are in untenable situations because local, regional and national governments are daily committing High Treason against the People:

They lie and manipulate both the information and the public media for partisan propaganda, Congress has been converted into a media circus unworthy of a country and dictate laws destroying decent jobs, allowing 25% of children to go hungry in Spain , destroying the public health and education, ruining dependeny people, youth and pensioners, cancelling social services and access to justice, and selling off the evicted houses and all public infrastructure that we have already paid. for  Shaming us citizens internationally with their misrule.

Corrupt governments, which only act to favor their caste, the economic elite, have concealed and falsified the bank bailout, robbing the country and loading giant debt. Now they repeat the move through SAREB, ( note: a special bank which was set up to hold and sell off the hundreds of thousands of evicted homes, etc) which promotes the re-re-sale of property agreed with banks and real estate prices to their benefit and to the detriment of the people who can not and should not continue to pay. The performance of governments in Spain is a sadistic regression to feudalism, plus an ignorant and incompetent myopia, repeating the most obscene  capitalist method of creating inequality and precariousness, causing permanent damage to persons.

We, who have had our present and future stolen by these governments and have been excluded and thrown in nthe rubbish by them , we act responsibly and legitimately to cover the basic necessities of life that they systematically deny us. These governments only serve to enrich themselves in their predatory, aberrant, inhuman and criminal plutocracy.

For these reasons, we have no other choice but to take the basic rights that have stolen from millions of people in this country, to create a decent life in a decent home, according to the Constitution of 78 which guarantees thias and is still in force. Hundreds of thousands of others, pushed to the limit by this scam, will follow in our footsteps to recover what is rightfully theirs.

We are here to create a responsible community that improves the condition of the building and enriches the social life of the neighborhood. Malasaña, a neighborhood with a long local history, is being subjected, like many others, to processes of real estate speculation and gentrification, dynamics that destroy the social fabric by displacingb the original inhabitants. We do not want a neighborhood where the City Council controls commerce and offers subsidies and licenses to create spaces crowded areas of consumption and alienated leisure consumtion. By liberating this building we wish to regain community spirit, neighborhood solidarity, and mutual support so we can know and recognize each other in the streets.

This building is owned by CaixaBank. It has been empty from 2009 until today. The only slight use was from November 2011 until February 2012, however, the Caixa and the Judge decided that private property was above the right to housing. Today things have changed, we now know that YES YOU CAN WIN, so today we challenge back the Caixa: Do you want to continue being known as the Bad Bank? We only want one thing, housing.

All this shows once again that private property excludes the majority of people from access to goods that actually belong to the commons and leaves many abandoned and disabled to sleep in the street. We demand that there be no more houses without people or homeless without houses. We’re going to pamper our new home, we’re going to rehabilitate and repair it to make it warm and decent housing.

Statewide, it is the 15th block liberated by the ‘Social Work’ squat campaign. The housing work groups of the assemblies of districts of Madrid , inspired and encouraged by the 15m Movement, as well as other groups struggling for decent housing, have been developiung a self-managed, assembly-based, horizontal response to the housing emergency caused by the banks with the complicity of the administration. On behalf o the Social Work f Ther Housing Assembly we hereby liberate this block of empty homes owned by  CaixaBank in Malasaña, Madrid, and today we make that public.

This afternoon we will contact the Caixa through its managing company DiagonalGest to give us a solution in the form of Social Rent. If by Tuesday we have not been answered, we will have to stay here until we get a solution.

There will be many more homes legitimately occupied by assemblies because “Yes He Can WIN” and “Yes WE SHOULD”
