Rebelling against Industrial Capitalism. The Acorn

Is the human species finally waking up to the fact that industrial capitalism is murdering the planet and realising that we all have to take action to stop it?

The signs are currently looking good in England, where the Extinction Rebellion (XR) movement has appeared out of nowhere and mobilised thousands of people to block streets and engage in civil disobedience.

The first big day of action was on Saturday November 17, when some 6,000 people took to the streets of London.

They blocked five London bridges and planted trees on Parliament Square. Image result for murray bookchin ecologyMore than 80 people were arrested.

Said Gail Bradbrook of XR: “This is an act of mass civil disobedience. This is the start of an international rebellion protesting the lack of action on the ecological crisis”.

There were swarming road blocks across London in the run-up to Rebellion Day 2, announced for Saturday November 24, 10am to 5pm at Parliament Square.

The Rebellion has also started to take off elsewhere, such as Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands and Ireland. Continue reading “Rebelling against Industrial Capitalism. The Acorn”

Why you Can’t be a Feminist if you’re Not an Anarchist

Is every feminist secretly an anarchist?

Feminism is not feminism if it is not antisexist, but also must be:

  • Antiracist (for wimmin of color)
  • Anticapitalist (for working class wimmin)
  • Female+Female love-positive (for lesbians and bisexual wimmin)
  • Anti-state (against the state control of wimmin’s autonomy, rejecting patriarchal protection rackets)
  • Anti-hierarchy (against wimmin exploiting other wimmin)

I can’t tell you how many wimmin have been turned away from anarchism — the politics of opposing all hierarchy — due to male violence, male abuse, male threats, male testerics. And that is an awful shame, because wimmin have the greatest chance for achieving anarchy. It’s pretty simple… Forget all your preconceptions about what anarchism is. Forget malestream anarchism with its male fantasies of “let’s kill all the bad people and we will win” because that’s just naive. Men are pretty dumb, let’s be honest. They expect everything to be cleaned up after them. Continue reading “Why you Can’t be a Feminist if you’re Not an Anarchist”

To Destroy Domination in All Its Forms: Anarcha-Feminist Theory, Organization and Action 1970-1978

by Julia Tanenbaum

This essay appears in the current issue of Perspectives on Anarchist Theory, available from AK Press here!

As anarchists look for genealogies of principles and praxis in a variety of social movements, from the anarcho-pacifists who spoke out against World War II to anarchists who joined the Black Power movement, so too should they look for their feminist foremothers, not only in the early 20th century anarchist movement but in the radical women’s movement of the 1970s.kornegger_anarchismfeminist

Many radical feminists shared anarchist goals such as ending domination, hierarchy, capitalism, gender roles, and interpersonal violence, and utilized and influenced the key anarchist organizational structure of the small leaderless affinity group.  They grappled with the questions of how to balance autonomy and egalitarianism and create nonhierarchical organizations that also promoted personal growth and leadership. In 1974 Lynne Farrow wrote, “Feminism practices what anarchism preaches.”

Anarcha Feminism is being Truly Anti-Authoritarian

anarchist feminist

Anarcha-Feminism   by Ruby Flick

This is my favorite writing about being a woman involved with anarchism based on my 33 years of experience. What has been put in bold are my own favorite passages that I have seen so clearly for so long.

For too long anarchist feminists have been labeled as the ‘ladies auxiliary of male bomb throwers’. The misconception and manipulation of both feminists and anarchist principles and practice have resulted in the use of sensationalist and ridiculing tactics by the state and its spokespeople.

This has not only polarised the general populace from potentially liberation concepts but has also polarised anarchists from feminists. In the past and more so recently there has been a uniting of these beliefs and Peggy Korneggers article; ‘Anarchism; the Feminist Connection’ goes so far as to say that the two genres of thought are inextricable tied although the connection has not been consciously articulated by feminists very often.feminists

Kornegger agrues that feminism’s  “emphasis on the small group as a basic organisational unit, on the personal as political, on anti- authoritarianism and on spontaneous direct action was essentially anarchism”. Continue reading “Anarcha Feminism is being Truly Anti-Authoritarian”

Eleven Feminisms in One: Going Viral Despite Internet Patriarchy

Dozens of varying Feminisms are undermining long established patrarchal priveliges worldwide

Feminism is under fierce attack on the internet. When looking for illustrations for this post I found many anti feminist sites. In the images I saw stacks of doctored photos denigrating feminism by mockery, divide-and-rule, inventions, junk science, misandry, rape celebration, patronizing, etc.

Mostly it seemed to me like pathetic bleating by Nth American men about losing any of their socially permitted patriarchal privileges,… But switch language on Google and you get similar results in different contexts..

Seems like we’re living through  giant  social battles that are going on around the world, in which  millions of women feel empowered by a perceived freedom and individuality on social media, threatening to undermine long established systems of cultural semi slavery, and provoking ‘testerical’ reactions from religious and authority figures.

One classic sexist tactic is  to single out  and exaggerate separatist ideas and continuously brand all feminists as ‘smelly, hairy, man haters’ etc. Continue reading “Eleven Feminisms in One: Going Viral Despite Internet Patriarchy”

March 8: CNT Women against patriarchy and Capital
Mujeres-LibresNo more empty word and hypocritical speeches. Heading into a new March 8, the union CNT has warned about situations of exploitation, unemployment and discrimination that women continue to suffer, “the main victims of the crisis of a system in decay.” Against this, the anarcho-syndicalist union supports the struggle against patriarchy and capitalism: “A revolution that does not have us in their ranks is doomed,” she underlined.
Below is the statement of CNT on a new March 8:
One more year, one more day, one more day, one more of the thousands of ephemeris flooding the calendar. Yet this is no ordinary day. It is the day when women stop putting up with being victims of gender violence to become the heroines of the day, always with the tagline of “much remains to be done.”seperate_and_equal_mujeres_libres_martha_ackelsburg
