Un caso impactante de negación del evidente resalta el problema que los católicos – y el Papa Francisco – tienen con la historia.

Es su fracaso hasta el momento de comprometerse con o incluso reconocer los últimos horrores sobre los que la Iglesia ha presidido .
Desde la destrucción de los Cátaros a las Lavanderías de la Magdalena , la Iglesia Católica ha experimentado con casi todo tipo de exterminio y genocidio, la tortura , la mutilación , la ejecución , la esclavitud, la crueldad y el abuso que conoce la humanidad . También hay que decir que en determinados momentos y lugares en todo el siglo pasado, ha sido una fuerza extraordinaria para el bien : las personas más valientes que he conocido son todos sacerdotes católicos, que – hasta que ellos también fueron aplastados y silenciados por la Iglesia – arriesgaron sus vidas para defender las personas vulnerables a la explotación y el asesinato ( 6 ) .
No es sólo que él no ha dicho nada acerca de este legado , sino que ha dejado de lado las oportunidades más obvias de hablar. La beatificación en octubre de 522 católicos asesinados por soldados republicanos durante la guerra civil española , por ejemplo, proporciona una oportunidad perfecta para reconocer el papel que la Iglesia desempeñó en la revolución de Franco y la posterior dictadura ( 7 ) . Pero a pesar de que habló en la ceremonia , por videoconferencia , lo hizo como si los asesinatos tuvieron lugar en un vacío político.
La negativa en julio por las cuatro órdenes religiosas que esclavizaban las mujeres en Irlanda en las Lavanderías de la Magdalena a pagarles una indemnización pedía a gritos una respuesta papal ( 8 ) . Ninguno llegó. ¿Cómo puede el Papa construir el futuro si no puede reconocer el pasado ?
En ninguna parte es la negación de la Iglesia mejor ejemplificada que en su campaña para canonizar al misionero franciscano Junípero Serra, cuyo aniversario número 300 cae el domingo . El culto de Serra personifica el problema católica con la historia -, así como las mentiras que apuntalan los mitos fundadores de los Estados Unidos.
Usted puede encontrar su estatua en el Capitolio , su cara en los sellos postales , su nombre estampada en las escuelas y en las calles y rutas de todo California . Fue beatificado por el Papa Juan Pablo II, después de que una monja estaba aparentemente curado de lupus, y ahora espera un segundo milagro para llegar a ser santo ( 9 ) .
Entonces, ¿cuál es el problema? Ah , sólo que él fundó el sistema de campos de trabajo que agilizó el genocidio cultural de California.
Junípero Serra personificaba el fanatismo de ojos brillantes que cegó a los misioneros católicos a los horrores que infligieron a los pueblos originarios de las Américas. Trabajar por primera vez en México , luego en Baja California (ahora parte de México ) , a continuación, la Alta California (ahora el estado de los EE.UU. ) , presidió un sistema de asombrosa brutalidad. Las Misiones de Serra eran un instrumento esencial de la colonización española y americana. Por eso tantas ciudades de California tienen nombres de santos : se fundaron las misiones . Pero en su tratamiento de los pueblos indígenas , se fue más allá incluso de las exigencias severas de la Corona. Felipe de Neve , gobernador de las Californias , expresó su horror de los métodos de Serra , quejándose de que el destino de las personas llevados a los misiones era «peor que la de los esclavos . » ( 12 ) Steven Hackel ha documentado en su nueva biografía como Serra saboteó los intentos de Neve para permitir los nativos americanos una medida de auto-gobierno , porque amenazaba su dominio sobre sus vidas.
Las diversas , sofisticadas y autónomas pueblos de California se redujeron en las misiones en el peonaje desesperada . Entre 1769, cuando Serra llegó a la Alta California y 1821 , cuando se puso fin a la dominación española , la población indígena se redujo en un tercio , a 200.000 ( 13 ) .
La afirmación de Junípero Serra a la santidad sólo puede sostenerse con el borrado de los pueblos originarios de California por segunda vez , y hay una campaña de presión ruidoso con este propósito. Hagiografías de Serra explican cómo mortificó su propia carne, no nos dicen nada acerca de cómo se sintió mortificando otras personas ( 14 ) .
Al revisar la biografía de Hackel hace quince días, el profesor católico Christopher O. Blum ensalzó Serra por su » trabajo sin fin por la edificación de la civilización en el desierto» ( 15 ) . Comparó el misionero a » los funcionarios coloniales españoles ilustrados que querían … dejar a los indios a su guiso inmoral» . «Los indios no sólo fueron por ahí desnuda la mayor parte del año – con la consecuencia predecible de la promiscuidad desenfrenada – pero ellos se dividieron en localidades de 250 habitantes o menos … ya preparadas para el pequeño tirano brutal o el médico brujo manipuladora » .
Los siglos de racismo , la crueldad y la falta de respeto requerido para justificar los ataques de la Iglesia aún no han llegado a su fin .
Me encantaría ver al Papa utilice el tricentenario el domingo 24 Nov 2013 para anunciar que no va a canonizar Serra , a pesar del numero de milagros su fantasma puede realizar , y empiece a reconocer algunas historias incómodas. Entonces , tal vez, como Jonathan insta , voy a poner un cartel de Francisco en mi pared. Pero no en el dormitorio.

A shocking case of denial highlights the problem that Catholics – and Pope Francis – have with history.

He’s a pin-up for liberals and progressives, “the obvious new hero of the left.” So says the Guardian’s Jonathan Freedland of Pope Francis(1), and it’s true that most of the surprises have been good ones.
His statements denouncing capitalism are of the kind that scarcely any party leader now dares to breathe(2,3). He appears to have renounced papal infallibility. He intends to reform the corrupt and scheming curia(4). He has declared a partial truce in the war against sex which his two immediate predecessors pursued (while carefully overlooking the rape of children) with such creepy fervour.
It’s worth noting that these are mostly changes of emphasis, not doctrine. Pope Francis won’t devote his reign to attacking gays, women, condoms and abortion, but nor does he seem prepared to change church policy towards them. But it’s not just this that spoils the story. There is a strange omission, which puts the Pope on the wrong side even of John Paul II(5). It’s his failure so far to engage with or even acknowledge the past horrors over which the Church has presided.
From the destruction of the Cathars to the Magdalene laundries, the Catholic Church has experimented with almost every kind of extermination, genocide, torture, mutilation, execution, enslavement, cruelty and abuse known to humankind. It has also, at certain moments and places across the past century, been an extraordinary force for good: the bravest people I have met are all Catholic priests, who – until they were also crushed and silenced by the Church – risked their lives to defend vulnerable people from exploitation and murder(6).
It’s not just that he has said nothing about this legacy; he has eschewed the most obvious opportunities to speak out. The beatification in October of 522 Catholics killed by republican soldiers during the Spanish civil war, for example, provided a perfect opportunity to acknowledge the role the Church played in Franco’s revolution and subsequent dictatorship(7). But though he spoke at the ceremony, by video link, he did so as if the killings took place in a political vacuum. The refusal in July by the four religious orders which enslaved women in Ireland’s Magdalene Laundries to pay them compensation cried out for a papal response(8). None came. How can the Pope get a grip on the future if he won’t acknowledge the past?
Nowhere is the Church’s denial better exemplified than in its drive to canonise the Franciscan missionary Junípero Serra, whose 300th anniversary falls on Sunday. Serra’s cult epitomises the Catholic problem with history – as well as the lies that underpin the founding myths of the United States.
You can find his statue on Capitol Hill, his face on postage stamps, his name plastered across schools and streets and trails all over California. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II, after a nun was apparently cured of lupus, and now awaits a second miracle to become a saint(9). So what’s the problem? Oh, just that he founded the system of labour camps that expedited California’s cultural genocide.
Junípero Serra personified the glitter-eyed fanaticism that blinded Catholic missionaries to the horrors they inflicted on the native peoples of the Americas. Working first in Mexico, then in Baja California (now part of Mexico), then Alta California (now the US state), he presided over a system of astonishing brutality.
Through various bribes and ruses, Native Americans were enticed to join the missions he founded. Once they had joined, they were forbidden to leave. If they tried to escape, they were rounded up by soldiers then whipped by the missionaries. Any disobedience was punished by the stocks or the lash.
They were, according to a written complaint, forced to work in the fields from sunrise until after dark, and fed just a fraction of what was required to sustain them(10). Weakened by overwork and hunger, packed together with little more space than slave ships provided(11), they died, mostly of European diseases, in their tens of thousands.
Serra’s missions were an essential instrument of Spanish and then American colonisation. This is why so many Californian cities have saints’ names: they were founded as missions. But in his treatment of the indigenous people, he went beyond even the grim demands of the Crown. Felipe de Neve, a governor of the Californias, expressed his horror of Serra’s methods, complaining that the fate of the missionised people was “worse than that of slaves.”(12) As Steven Hackel documents in his new biography, Serra sabotaged Neve’s attempts to permit the Native Americans a measure of self-governance, which threatened his dominion over their lives.
The diverse, sophisticated and self-reliant people of California were reduced by the missions to desperate peonage. Between 1769, when Serra arrived in Alta California and 1821, when Spanish rule ended, the Native American population there fell by one third, to 200,000(13).
Junípero Serra’s claim to sainthood can be sustained only by erasing the native peoples of California a second time, and there is a noisy lobby with this purpose. Serra’s hagiographies explain how he mortified his own flesh; they tell us nothing about how he mortified other people’s(14).
In reviewing Hackel’s biography a fortnight ago, the Catholic professor Christopher O. Blum extolled Serra for his “endless labor of building civilization in the wilderness”(15). He contrasted the missionary to “the Enlightened Spanish colonial officials who wanted … to leave the Indians to their immoral stew”. “The Indians there not only went around naked much of the year – with the predictable consequence of rampant promiscuity – but they were divided into villages of 250 or fewer inhabitants … ready-made for the brutal petty tyrant or the manipulative witch doctor”. The centuries of racism, cruelty and disrespect required to justify the assaults of the Church have not yet come to an end.
I would love to see the Pope use the tercentenary on Sunday to announce that he will not canonise Serra, however many miracles his ghost might perform, and will start to engage with some uncomfortable histories. Then, perhaps, as Jonathan urges, I’ll put a poster of Francis on my wall. But not in the bedroom.
