Do we still need feminism?

This week someone asked me if feminism was still needed in the times in which we live. I’ve heard he arguments to justify not needing feminism in today’s society not thousands, but maybe millions of times, here are some of them:
What about the Constitution and Article 14, that’s «positive discrimination», what about psychologically abusive women, what about women who want to be »kept», and what about the fact that many complaints of violence are exaggerated and they only up take the cases of women, that also men are abused and do not get in the news, that the «poor men» are cornered and no longer know how to relate to us because they fear being reported for the least little joke, … and so much more.
I assure anyone reading this I had to do a rigorous exercise in patience to listen (again) to these arguments, whose only novelty was that they came from a young woman, a mere 20 years old.
I’ll start my answer by saying the same thing I said to her: I am a feminist by conviction and that my claim is that human rights of women and men are really the same everywhere, and my aim is to unmask and make inequalities visible as a step to correcting them.
I don’t accept the so called «natural law»argument that justifies sexism saying our rights are different because nature has made us different.
After that I tried (without much success I think, at least in the short term) to explain to this girl that feminism was not only necessary, but it is essential if we really believe in or want a democratic society.
It is necessary because although we may not want to recognize it, we still treat girls and boys quite differently, even before birth, so that we are socialized unequally and therefore assume unequal roles.
Because patriarchy survives in every corner of our minds and even our hearts, even allowing people to openly justify the higher levels of inequality, like sexist terrorism.
Because there are still institutions like the Catholic Church which explicitly denies rights to women and still considers us to be subsidiaries and even property of men, and others like the Royal Spanish Academy, who assert through their definitions that mothers don’t procreate but just give birth.
Because they continue trampling our rights and freedoms, including our right to decide anout our own body and our motherhood. Because we are still relegated to positions of second or third in the decision-making spaces.
Because we get paid less for doing the same job. For though the university classrooms are full of women, it is men who run them. Because although women have a higher life expectancy, health studies are still being conducted mostly on men.
Because history is hiding the works of art and all kinds of contributions made by women. Because our bodies are used as battlefields where men decide, whether in an armed conflict or a conflict betweeen couples.
Because our bodies are kidnapped and abused for sexual exploitation in other countries or parts of the world.
Because human rights of women are violated systematically in many areas of the world and even in our own country. Because in the symbolic constructs imposed on us all that inequality and symbolic structural violence already exists, even before birth. Because poverty preys on women and girls. Because they kill us for being women.
And so many arguments and which can be summarized in one: While there is only one woman in the world who still has one of her human rights trampled on, feminism not only necessary, it is essential.
Because feminism is a way of living and thinking that sees people as free and with full rights and potentialities beyond gender.
Because it seeks to promote the strengths of all people to build a just and egalitarian society. Because it seeks social justice in all areas.
Because androcentrism seeks balance with full equality and freedom of all people, dismantling patriarchy and symbolic aspects that it represents, to build spaces of real equality while seeking that the talents of more than half of the world population are incorporated into all areas of life.
Because it aims to break and remove historical privileges for half of the population. Because it questions and deconstructs the order of things to re-build from a mutually supportive perspective. Because violence brings nothing positive to the lives of people in any way.
Because it’s a way of life and not just a demand for equal rightst. It perceives power and authority to be not the same thing, and embraces human relations that are much more horizontal and symmetrical. Because it treats people NOT as objects and restores integrity and dignity as free human beings.
And fortunately now many young women and even men are starting to struggle, strainingfand pushing ahead, and even advocating new forms of feminism that tomorrow will exist… yet the objective has been, is and will be the same: the struggle for real equality of rights and opportunities for all people and in all areas of our lives.

¿Sigue siendo necesario el feminismo?

Esta semana alguien me preguntó si el feminismo seguía siendo necesario en los tiempos en los que vivimos. Los argumentos para justificar la no necesidad del feminismo en nuestra sociedad actual los he escuchado no miles, sino millones de veces:
Que si la Constitución y su artículo 14, que si la “discriminación positiva” que se está dando, que si las mujeres somos unas maltratadoras psicológicas, que pretendemos que nos “mantengan”, que si hay tantas denuncias por violencia de género es por los medios que exageran mucho y sólo sacan los casos de mujeres, pero también hay hombres maltratados y no salen en los telediarios, que si los “pobres hombres” están acorralados y ya no saben cómo relacionarse con nosotras porque temen ser denunciados a la mínima broma que nos puedan gastar… y así un largo etcétera.
Aseguro a quien pueda leer esto que hice un ejercicio de paciencia voluntaria para escuchar (de nuevo) este argumento, cuya novedad radica en que venía de una mujer joven, de apenas unos 20 años. Y voy a comenzar mi respuesta diciendo lo mismo que le dije a ella: que soy feminista por convicción y que mi pretensión es que los Derechos Humanos de mujeres y hombres sean realmente los mismos en todas partes, y desmaquillar y desnudar las desigualdades para hacerlas visibles y corregirlas. Que no me vale el llamado “derecho natural” que justifica que somos diferentes porque la naturaleza nos ha hecho diferentes. A partir de ahí intenté (creo que sin mucho éxito al menos de inmediato) explicarle a esta joven que el feminismo no sólo era necesario, sino que es imprescindible si realmente nos creemos que somos una sociedad democrática. Y es necesario porque aunque no se quiera ver, seguimos tratando de forma desigual a las niñas que a los niños, incluso antes de nacer, porque nos socializamos de manera desigual y por tanto asumimos roles desiguales.
Porque el patriarcado pervive en cada rincón de nuestra mente e incluso de nuestros corazones, permitiendo incluso que haya gente que justifique la mayor de las desigualdades: el terrorismo machista. Porque sigue habiendo instituciones como la Iglesia católica que niega explícitamente derechos a las mujeres y sigue considerándonos como subsidiarias de los hombres, y otras como la Real Academia Española, que consideran a través de sus definiciones que las madres no engendramos sólo parimos. Porque se siguen pisoteando nuestros derechos y libertades, como por ejemplo nuestro derecho a decidir sobre nuestro propio cuerpo y nuestra maternidad. Porque se nos siguen relegando a puestos de segunda o tercera categoría en los espacios de toma de decisiones. Porque seguimos cobrando menos por realizar el mismo trabajo. Porque aunque las aulas universitarias están llenas de mujeres, son los hombres quienes las dirigen. Porque aunque las mujeres tenemos una mayor expectativa de vida, los estudios sobre salud se siguen realizando mayoritariamente sobre los hombres. Porque la historia nos sigue ocultando las obras de arte y aportaciones de todo tipo realizadas por las mujeres. Porque nuestros cuerpos son utilizados como campos de batalla allá donde los hombres lo deciden, sea en un conflicto armado o en un conflicto de pareja.
Porque nuestros cuerpos son secuestrados y maltratados para ser explotados sexualmente en otros países o lugares del mundo. Porque los Derechos Humanos de las mujeres son pisoteados sistemáticamente en muchas zonas del mundo e incluso de nuestro mundo particular. Porque en los espacios simbólicos que nos imponen ya existe toda esa desigualdad y violencia simbólica o estructural desde antes de nacer. Porque la pobreza se ceba en mujeres y niñas. Porque nos matan por ser mujeres. Y así muchísimos argumentos más y que se podría resumir en uno: Mientras exista una sola mujer en el mundo a quien hayan pisoteado uno solo de sus Derechos Humanos, el feminismo no sólo será necesario, será imprescindible.
Porque el feminismo es una forma de vivir y de pensar que considera a las personas como seres libres y con plenitud de derechos y de potencialidades más allá de su género. Porque busca fomentar las fortalezas de todas las personas para construir una sociedad igualitaria y justa. Porque busca la justicia social en todos los ámbitos. Porque pretende equilibrar el androcentrismo con la igualdad y la plena libertad de todas las personas, desmontando el patriarcado y los aspectos simbólicos que le representan, para construir espacios de igualdad real y efectiva al tiempo que pretende que los talentos de más de la mitad de la población mundial se incorporen en todas las esferas de la vida.
Porque pretende romper y eliminar privilegios históricos para con la mitad de la población. Porque se cuestiona el orden de las cosas para deconstruirlo y volverlo a construir desde una perspectiva más solidaria. Porque la violencia no aporta nada positivo a las vidas de las personas en ningún sentido. Porque es una manera de vivir y no sólo de pensar que nos iguala y nos acerca. Porque entiende que poder y autoridad no son lo mismo y busca relaciones humanas mucho más horizontales y simétricas. Porque no trata a las personas como objetos y les devuelve la integridad y la dignidad total que han de tener como seres humanos libres.
Y afortunadamente muchas mujeres jóvenes e incluso hombres vienen detrás pisando muy fuerte y apostando incluso por nuevas formas de feminismos que serán los del mañana, aunque el objetivo ha sido, es y será el mismo: la lucha por una igualdad real y efectiva de derechos y oportunidades entre todas las personas y en todos los ámbitos de nuestras vidas.
